Regio Plants - project
Network for health-promoting plant-based raw materials
02/2024. Regio-Plants is a project to establish a research network for the use of health-promoting plant-based raw materials from the Bavaria-Tyrol-Upper Austria region: from identification to efficient use.
Regio Plants: Project goal
Naturally occurring plant substances can have positive effects on diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and cancer, but also on the health and performance of livestock. Regio-Plants is building an interdisciplinary and transnational research network in which the partners are searching for new active ingredients from native plants. In addition, they are expanding their knowledge of local health-promoting plants such as pome fruit (especially apples), also with regard to the selection of varieties, cultivation methods and storage conditions. The target groups of the activities are companies (primary producers and processing companies) and consumers as well as the scientific community.
Activities
- Expansion and screening of a regional extract library
- Investigation of cultivation measures and storage of pome fruit with a focus on valuable ingredients
- Development of test systems for the allergenic potential of crops
- Investigation of the ingredients of apples depending on variety, cultivation and storage
- Characterization and cultivation of regional plants with blood sugar-lowering effect
- Characterization of regional plants for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases
- Passing on the information gained to the public and companies (e.g. fruit growers, producer associations)
Results
- Practical, scientific network for the use of regional plant-based raw materials for human health
- Expertise in quantifying the allergenic potential of crops
- Increased knowledge about the use of apples and other regional plants among the project partners as well as primary producers and processing companies
