Nature Protocols
FFoQSI research project published
02/2024. A paper of a former FFoQSI research project has been published in the renowned journal "Nature Protocols".
From a former FFoQSI research project, MASTER (https://www.master-h2020.eu/), in which the FFoQSI Scientific Director Martin Wagner and the former FFoQSI researcher Narciso Martin Quijada, among others, participated, a paper has now been published in the renowned journal "Nature Protocols". Entitled "Improved sampling and DNA extraction procedures for microbiome analysis in food-processing environments", the paper outlines a protocol developed for sampling the microbiomes in food processing facilities, including those occurring in surfaces with potentially extremely low biomass. The procedure includes an optimized DNA-extraction stage to maximize DNA yield that is further subjected to whole metagenome sequencing and further bioinformatic analysis, offering a more complete analysis of the microbiome than targeted and/or culture-dependent methods that are currently used in industry, as not only the microbes present but also their genomic features (e.g., antimicrobial resistance and virulence genes) can be unravelled.
